News : Kolkata open to Ganguly involvement Players/Officials: Sourav Ganguly
Series/Tournaments: Indian Premier League
Teams: India |
Sourav Ganguly might find himself back on the field for the 2011 IPL after all, even though he failed to attract any bids from franchises during the auction on January 8 and 9. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the BCCI has sent a letter to the franchises asking if they have any objections to teams signing Indian players who were unsold in the auction. The letter specifically mentions Ganguly as one of the players the franchises are interested in, along with Wasim Jaffer and VRV Singh, who were the other two Indian players that weren't bought. IPL rules presently do not permit unsold players to be signed after the auction.
The Kochi franchise is reported to have shown interest in signing Ganguly, and had apparently contacted the BCCI, leading to the sending of the letter. However, Mehul Shah, one of the co-owners of the franchise, told ESPNcricinfo that was not the case and they had not asked the board for permission to sign Ganguly.
The franchises have until February 3 to respond to the letter, with the BCCI expected to decide on the matter during the IPL governing council meeting on February 4. "There are two conditions to the proposal," a franchise official said. Teams will have to pay the minimum base price set for the player in the auction and the cost of the player will come out of the team's salary cap.
Ganguly had raised eyebrows when he doubled his base price to $400,000 just before the auction, and officials from a number of franchises were sceptical that he would find any takers. At the time Ganguly expressed incredulity at finding no buyers. "I don't know what happened," he said. "It's up to the teams to decide on the players but I didn't expect to go unsold. It's hard to believe that I don't figure among the 100-odd cricketers."
Subsequently, Ganguly's original franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, said that it would be open to having him on board in some capacity.

If Kochi does sign Ganguly up, then we would have the wonderful sight of Ganguly and Laxman running between the wickets and converting threes into twos, twos into ones and ones into naughts! People should realize that being match fit is a very different ball game. An undisputed champion like Glenn Mcgrath was ignored by DD in season 2, that too in helpful pitches of SA- just because as fast bowler, he had been retired for the last 2 years.
Posted byI support DADA. Dada go ahead with your Tiger image. Don't disappointed. We all hope and pray to GOD you will come back with your strength. You just concentrate your tallent for cricket with any IPL team. We all know your success will come at ur door.
Posted by PETTAIPISTA on (January 31 2011, 12:05 PM GMT)Ganguly's omission is not because of doubling his base price. Even if his base price had been $2,00,000, he would not have had any buyer for him. It's simply because of his attitude that he wants to dominate the team and he would never listen to others' suggestions. Further, young players suit better than him for this format of game. His fielding has always been below par and it's not a surprise that there was no buyer for him. Infact, KKR would be happy now and would play with fresh energy without Ganguly. The franchise which picks him would face difficulties in managing the team.
Posted by cricmastr on (January 31 2011, 12:02 PM GMT)ganguly should step aside from the game even though he is good player..and googd come backer but the fact is that they had played with his pride which make the things unusual....one of the most succesful captain of the game & india is being made a laughing stock thats not the way to treat seniors so to salvage his pride he should be aside from ipl as player just like kumble....that make him great the franchise doesn't know any thing about cricket........
Posted by _WHOOSh_ on (January 31 2011, 11:48 AM GMT)@All the people who think that Dada did wrong in doubling his base price: As far as my understanding goes, Dada has always been a very smart cricketer. Prior to these auctions, all the cricketers would be getting some kind of signals or the other from the relevant franchises. Kumble leaving the auction so suddenly is open to debate (that he got the signals of going unsold vis-a-vis responsibilities in his new role at the KCA), but I am sure that Dada got the opposite signals. That he was underselling himself and should demand more... And then he was betrayed in the auction by the ones whom he had trusted. I know that all of this is based on conjecture and nothing more, but having followed the career of Dada for so long, I am somehow not convinced that he would do anything so stupid to humiliate himself in public.

Posted by sarathy_m2 on (January 31 2011, 11:32 AM GMT)Ganguly should prefer to stay out of any IPL team. Fitting option is to help CAB in preparations of state team.
Posted by Amitprotya on (January 31 2011, 11:25 AM GMT)Sourav Ganguly is one of the greatests of world cricket. He is atrue champion. He still wants to play and he deserves it.The current indian team is based on most those cricketers that he discovered.
Posted byIf Dada plays for Kochi, KKR is sure to lose thousands of fans, including me!
Posted by Meahul-Kotharii on (January 31 2011, 11:03 AM GMT)The fact is fact, IPL is not about cricket, it is about investment and returns. Ganguly has at no point of time in IPL proved his talent. To take him now means beaing with him for 3 years. His runs hunger is finished and this would frustrate in franchise. Dada should focus on comentry. Sorry Kolkata accept the truth
