Q.1: Why do different countries use different poverty lines?
Ans: Poverty line is related to the level of per capita consumption or income necessary to fulfill some minimum basic needs. What is necessary to fulfill these basic needs differ according to the time and place. Therefore, poverty line also varies at different times and in different countries.
Each country fixes its own poverty line that is considered to be appropriate for its existing level of development and its accepted minimum social norms.
Q.2: Explain the term Poverty.
Ans: Officially ‘Poverty’ is defined as the inability of a person to earn a ‘minimum level’ of income necessary to fulfill basic needs like - foods, shelter and clothing etc. But truly speaking Human Poverty is a multi-dimensional problem which is not confined to the economic factors alone. With development, the definition of what constitutes poverty also changes. Therefore the concept of human poverty must be broadened and should be looked through other social indicators like - illiteracy level, lack of general resistance to mal-nutrition, lack of access to resources like healthcare, safe drinking water, job securities, sanitation, lack of self-confidence without social equality etc.
Q.3: Which categories of people come under the category of urban poor?
Ans: The casual workers, the unemployed, daily wage earners, domestic servants, rickshaw pullers, etc.
Q.4: How are the socio-economic factors responsible for poverty?
Ans: To fulfill social obligations, people in India have to spend a lot of money which becomes a cause of indebtedness which consequently leads to poverty.
