Has anyone ever heard of getting "pulmanaryfibrosis" from grooming and all the animal dust.

Yes, That's why we wear masks when Blowing big hairies and use Clipper vacs. In fact, I just installed a air cleaning system like they use in carpenter shops to pull all the hair into it. seems to be working real good. Pet hair in your lungs does not ever break down so everyone should be extra careful not to inhale more than necessary.

I buy my masks from my dentist's office. They are those nice soft ones with elastic earloops. I can't stand those hard ones from the hardware store.

yorkees, could this be a problem you're having? perhaps all that built up hair, combined with your new climate is aggravating your asthma?

Fido,
I'm not sure but I think a chest x-ray would be the only way to tell if this is your problem. I am told it resembles black lung disease like coal miners, and people who deal with asbestos get. Hair doesn't break down in the lungs. Kinda like a giant hairball.
kygroom, I got the system from the Harbor Freight catalog. cost about $159. It just plugs into a regular plug, uses about 2-3 amps and draws hair, dust and particles into it. It has a filter screen on the front and a giant vacumm cleaner bag inside. So far it is working great. I have it hung about 2 ft down from the ceiling in the middle of the room and it does suck in the hair, especially when you are doing the big hairies and that hair is flying all over. At the end of the day, I use the HV and blow around the whole room and what doesn't get sucked up settles on the floor and can be swept up. I worked many years at this and never realized the damage i was doing to myself till I started getting the scratchy throat, runny nose and literally coughing up hairballs.

Well, I am no longer a dog groomer due to this problem. And regardless of the fact that I always used a mask from day one, the only thing that helped me was quitting grooming!

I do have mild asthma, and the dander/hair aggravated it. I used any and all types of masks, but nothing cut down my breathing problems.

Good luck!

IMHO, one of the worst physical risks, about being a groomer is not hair but DANDER. It's generally microscopic, and is very profuse -- hnot easily picked up by typical cleaning methods. Thank goodness I have a clipper vacuming system, but I still get overwhelmed from time to time.

I use to work for Petsmart but dont any longer. While I was there, I was always worried about all the hair I was inhaling as we were never offered a mask when hv'ing the undercoat out of a big hairy. I did ask for one once and was told to go check in another dept and see if they had any. They didnt have any so I stopped asking as it became normal for all of us to inhale great amounts of hair on a daily basis. Now, after reading this thread I hope I didnt do some permanent damage to my lungs or respitory system. I did call osha and reported this store, the osha invetigator was very nice to talk to and VERY interested in what I had to say. He said he was going to contact the store today and start a file on them to keep track of any other complaints. He also informed me that we were supposed to be wearing ear plugs as well..that was never offered to us either.
I wish I would of made the call sooner...but was kind of hesitant to "make waves" while I was there. Im hoping that at least the other groomers there will have a healthier work environment because of the call.
If any other groomers out there are forced to work in a unhealthy environment..pls dont be afraid to call osha, it was a very pleasant expierence and best of all you can remain anonymous. Your really do need to be proactive where your health is concerned.

I have been doing a little searching through the archives on this subject, and it"s quite scary. I did a search for an air filteration system on Harbor Freight and from what I can figure, all this is is a box type thing with a blower {fan} in it, and a filter on the back side. Wouldn't this be very cheap to make yourself? I'm going to Wally World tonight and look for a filter, and see what I can come up with. Or is there more to this than I realize?
