Aztec Pyramids

All about the Aztec Pyramids and their uses.

Aztec pyramids are the single thing that is left behind of the greatest civilization this might have ever lived. The Aztecs built great pyramids for religious purposes. All of their rituals and celebrations either started, were conducted, or ended at the pyramid. They used them to worship their gods and to offer sacrifices to them. They built the pyramids to look like mountains, which to them was the symbol of prosperity and life giving water. The Aztec religion called for complete obedience to the gods, so regular sacrifices were offered up to keep the gods and goddesses satisfied, and all the sacrifices took place at the pyramids. The pyramids of the Aztecs are unlike those of the Egyptians because theirs had steps and chambers on top. They used the outside of the pyramid more than the inside, like the Egyptians.

All of the Aztecs pyramids have steps on the outsides of them, in which the priests ascended to conduct the worship ceremony. I personally have been to Teotihuacan, and I have climbed these steps â€" it's no small task. I have to stop several times on my way up to catch my breath. The elevation in Mexico City is 6000 feet, but still â€" the steps are extremely deep and not very wide. The Aztecs were small people with little feet â€" my size 9 just barely covered the width of the stair. The Aztecs pyramids are majestic and awesome. The Aztec's city pyramids varied as they had different purposes. There were the pyramids for worship, and then some were temples , and some were used for other business purposes.
